Remembering Charles Smith, Laboratory Chief in Genetics
It is with profound sadness that we learned about the untimely and sudden passing of Charles Smith, on June 10, 2023. He was 64.
“Charlie,” as he was known to all who knew him, worked at Einstein for over 40 years, most of that time running the departmental kitchen for the department of genetics, in the Ullmann Building.
Before retiring in 2021, Charlie made many important, professional contributions to the research efforts in the genetics department, which would not have been as successful without him. In 2019, he received Einstein’s Distinguished Service Award in recognition of his importance to the department and College of Medicine.
The nomination letter recommending him for the honor noted: “Through his unstinting efforts, the impact he has had and continues to have on the mission of the department and the school cannot be overstated. In the communal service he provides, Charlie embodies the collegial spirit of Albert Einstein College of Medicine and there surely can be no one more deserving of the Distinguished Service Award than Mr. Charles Smith.”
On a more personal level, Dr. Hannes Buelow, professor associate chair of genetics, observed, “Charlie was an ever friendly and competent presence in the department, and was always willing to help. He was knowledgeable about the department like no other.”
Added Jan Vijg, professor and chair, “While we’ve had to learn to work without Charlie since his retirement, he still is and will be sadly missed. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and wish he had been able to enjoy his retirement years for much longer.”
