Einstein Celebrates Constitution Day 2023
As an institution that receives federal funding, Albert Einstein College of Medicine observes Constitution Day (which occurs on September17) annually. This year, to commemorate the 236th anniversary of the document’s signing, the office of general counsel is hosting the screening of the film Marshall (starring Chadwick Boseman in the title role), for its relevance to our Constitution.
All members of the campus community are invited to view the movie on Tuesday, September 19, 2023, beginning at 11:30 a.m., in the seating along Main Street, in Forchheimer. There will be information on the Constitution as well as popcorn and fun prizes available between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., with a chance to win the Constitution Day trivia raffle by answering a brief quiz with questions pertaining to the film and the Constitution.
“Constitution Day is an opportunity for educational institutions such as Einstein to celebrate and reflect on one of our country’s most important and enduring founding documents,” said Vincenzo “Vinnie” Lippiello, associate counsel at Einstein. “We invite our campus community members to stop by whether to view the movie or to check out the information and fun items we’ll have in connection to our celebration.”
“If you live in the United States, the Constitution fundamentally affects your life,” added Shannon Henderson, assistant counsel. “Understanding its purpose and history allows you to thoughtfully participate in national conversations about how this document, written in 1787, should be applied in our modern world.”
Marshall – highlights some crucial aspects of the Constitution: protecting the rights of citizens, including from discrimination. It focuses on Thurgood Marshall, the first African-American Supreme Court Justice, who successfully argued the case Brown v. Board of Education, demonstrating that public school segregation was unconstitutional. The film offers a glimpse into the history of a defender of the very civil liberties that the Constitution is designed to protect.
“The importance of governmental checks and balances and individual human freedoms outlined in the Constitution cannot be overstated. In a way, they reflect the guiding principles of the patient care and research that takes place at Einstein,” noted Vinnie.
The film screening will be followed by a trivia raffle. Those correctly completing our Constitution Day trivia quiz will be entered for the chance to win fun prizes, with the grand prize a one-of-a-kind Einstein fleece vest featuring Uncle Albert in judge’s robes. All attendees can receive a “pocket-copy” Constitution while supplies last.
If you’re unable to see the film at the event, it also is available to view via multiple online options. All are welcome to take part in the trivia regardless of where you watch the movie!
