Symposium on Diabetes Foot Ulcers Offered
On Wednesday, March 20, 2024, from noon to 5:00 p.m., the divisions of endocrinology and infectious diseases of the department of medicine will host the first-ever Montefiore Medical Center Diabetes Foot Ulcer Symposium: Best Practices 2024.
“We’re bringing together experts from around the country in the fields of cardiology, vascular surgery, podiatry, endocrinology, and infectious diseases to highlight a serious problem in the Bronx: lower extremity amputation,” noted Dr. Alyson Myers, associate professor of medicine, who has spearheaded the planning of this half-day event with colleague Dr. Johanna Daily, professor of medicine and of microbiology & immunology. “Because multidisciplinary care can improve health outcomes for patients with diabetes, we plan to apply this approach to diabetes foot ulcer care.”
Dr. Myers added, “Lower extremity amputations are associated with a 50% mortality rate over five years and early revascularization, wound care, and glycemic control can prevent amputations of lower extremities, which tend to occur at a higher frequency in the Bronx and are among the highest in NYC and in the nation. Through the symposium we seek to address this critical issue and to discuss the ways in which we can tackle the problem to arrive at better outcomes for our patients.”
For the symposium, Drs. Myers and Daily have assembled a panel of experts who are national leaders in diabetes foot ulcer care and limb salvage. Through a variety of presentations and a panel discussion, those in attendance will gain critical insights into the standard of care practices for preventing and treating a diabetes foot ulcer, innovations in the field, and strategies for follow-up care to allow healing.
“Our speakers and panels will highlight the state-of-the-art best practices for the prevention and care of diabetes foot ulcers,” said Dr. Daily. “We’ll discuss evidence-based care practice and both the challenges and solutions for providing care.”
The symposium, which will be held in Einstein’s LeFrak Auditorium (Price Center/Block Research Pavilion), is open to faculty, physicians, nurses, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, podiatrists, wound care specialists, medical students, fellows, and residents, with the opportunity to earn up to seven of CME or CEU credits for participation. It also will be accessible via Zoom.
Registration is required, with the deadline for in-person attendance on Friday, March 15. Those attending virtually may register through the morning of the event. Check-in on the day of the event will begin at 11:30 a.m.
Please Note: Both online and in-person registration for this CME/CEU event includes a fee of $25, with a trainee discount available if you email Dr. Myers (alymyers@montefiore.org).
