From Labs to Leadership: Women in Science Day Explores the Journey
Each year, the Einstein community comes together to acknowledge the tremendous contributions women have made in science at Einstein and in the field as a whole. Organized by Einstein’s Women’s Networking Group, this year’s event on February 11 brought together more than 160 researchers, men and women, faculty members, and students to engage in insightful discussions, share experiences, and build networks. The event underscored the importance of supporting women navigating the transition from conducting research to assuming influential leadership roles in science.

“As we gather under the theme ‘From Labs to Leadership,’ we celebrate the remarkable advances and achievements of women in STEM,” said Yaron Tomer, M.D., the Marilyn and Stanley M. Katz Dean and chief academic officer at Montefiore Einstein. “During the past few decades, we have witnessed transformative changes in the landscape of science and medicine. Women have moved to positions of prominence and influence, exemplifying hard work, resilience, and dedication.”

The highlight of the event was the keynote address by Randi Albin, Ph.D. ‘86, former senior director, global regulatory strategy, Pfizer, titled, “Inspiring the Leader Within Us.” Drawing from her career journey, she spoke about the challenges and triumphs of moving from hands-on research to decision-making roles. Her talk emphasized the need for mentorship, resilience, and self-advocacy to advance beyond the lab.
Yoon Kang, M.D., vice dean for education, expanded on Dr. Albin’s talk, moderating a panel titled “Closing the Leadership Gap.” Panelists included Anne Bresnick, Ph.D., associate dean for postdoctoral affairs; Jessica Dunne, Ph.D., senior medical director, Sanofi; Ignacio Guerrero-Ros, Ph.D., vice president and biomedical scientist partner at Russo Partners; and Jessica Kahn, M.D., M.P.H., pediatrics. They reflected on their career transitions and their roles in shaping policies within their fields.
