Top Influencer in Healthcare
Steven M. Safyer, M.D., president and CEO of Montefiore Medicine, was named a top leader on Modern Healthcare’s list of the “50 Most Influential Physician Executives & Leaders.” This year, Dr. Safyer rose in the ranks to number 13, up from number 36 in 2015. It is the eighth consecutive year that he has been recognized among this distinguished group of medical executive leaders.
Steven M. Safyer, M.D.Dr. Safyer has worked at Montefiore since 1982. An internist in the department of medicine, throughout his career he has been a leader in advancing Montefiore as a preeminent, innovative and equitable healthcare system. He also has been a dedicated advocate for delivering a single standard of excellent care for all patients, regardless of their social or economic circumstances. Since his appointment as CEO in 2008, Dr. Safyer has increased Montefiore’s existing care-management capabilities, and placed an emphasis on innovation and population health.
Dr. Safyer’s association with Einstein goes back to medical school. He is a member of the M.D. Class of 1982, and currently is professor of medicine and of epidemiology & population health at the College of Medicine. In 2009, he and Einstein dean Dr. Allen M. Spiegel signed an historic partnership aimed at streamlining collaborations between the two institutions’ clinical, research and teaching programs. And last year, an agreement signed between Montefiore Health System and Yeshiva University transferred financial and operational responsibility for the College of Medicine to Montefiore. This further reinforces core values that Einstein and Montefiore share, including a deeply held commitment to social justice. The agreement allows the two institutions to more fully integrate their complementary strengths while building on the decades-long synergy among their educational, research and clinical enterprises.
