Diabetes Expert Receives Behavioral Research Honor
Dr. Elizabeth Arquin Walker is the recipient of the 2016 Richard R. Rubin Award, given by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) to recognize a behavioral researcher who has made outstanding contributions to the study and understanding of the behavioral aspects of diabetes. In conjunction with the honor, Dr. Walker, professor of medicine and of epidemiology & population health at Einstein, will present a lecture titled “Crossing Borders” during the association’s 76th Scientific Sessions in June.
Elizabeth Arquin WalkerDr. Walker is internationally recognized as a generous mentor and collaborator and an advocate for translating behavioral interventions and communication technologies into the real world of clinical care and community settings, especially for underserved populations in New York City and in resource-poor countries.
She has been a principal investigator of multiple NIH-funded translational studies focused on self-management behaviors, and she has served since 1995 as co-investigator and behavioral scientist for the Diabetes Prevention Program and its Outcomes Study. A diabetes nurse specialist, she has been a certified diabetes educator for more than three decades and is a past president of health care and education for the ADA.
The ADA’s 76th Scientific Sessions, to be held June 10-14, 2016, at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, is the world’s largest scientific meeting focused on diabetes. The 2016 Scientific Sessions is expected to attract more than 16,000 attendees and offers researchers and healthcare professionals from around the world the opportunity to share ideas and learn about significant advances in diabetes research, treatment and care. During the five-day meeting, attendees have access to more than 2,500 original research presentations and the opportunity to participate in provocative and engaging exchanges with leading diabetes experts.
