Research Excellence of Einstein Ph.D. Graduate Recognized by Chinese Government
The year 2016 has been eventful for Dachuan Zhang, who received his Ph.D. from Einstein on May 25, 2016. In the weeks leading up to that milestone, Dr. Zhang earned recognition for his excellence in research.
Dachuan Zhang receives his honor from Chinese ambassador Qiyue ZhangMost recently, he received the Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Students Abroad, presented by Chinese ambassador Qiyue Zhang at a ceremony and reception held at the office of the Chinese Consulate General, in New York. That honor dovetailed with his selection as one of four recipients of the 20th annual Julius Marmur Award, which celebrates excellence in scientific research by Einstein graduate students.
Born in Nanjing, China, Dr. Zhang completed his undergraduate studies at Nanjing University, before coming to the United States in the fall of 2010 to earn his Ph.D. in Einstein’s graduate program for the biomedical sciences. In 2011, he joined the laboratory of Dr. Paul Frenette, professor of medicine and of cell biology, and chair and director of the Ruth L. and David S. Gottesman Institute for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Research.
Under Dr. Frenette’s mentorship, Dr. Zhang conducted his graduate research on neutrophil aging, findings from which appeared in the prestigious journal Nature last year. He successfully defended his thesis in 2015 and has continued as a postdoctoral fellow in the Frenette lab.
Upon receiving the award from Ambassador Zhang, Dr. Zhang noted, “This award signifies recognition by the Chinese community and government of my efforts and achievements as a graduate student. It validates my research capabilities and has boosted my confidence to pursue biomedical research further.”
