Passing of Dr. Samuel Levine Marks the End of an Era
The Einstein-Montefiore community notes with sadness the passing of Dr. Samuel Levine on July 16, 2016. Dr. Levine was associate professor emeritus of physical medicine and rehabilitation at Einstein and founding clinical director of the Lubin Rehabilitation Center (now located at Montefiore/Wakefield) of the Jack D. Weiler Hospital (now known as the Einstein-Weiler Hospital), a division of Montefiore. He was 88.
Samuel Levine, M.D.Dr. Levine served on the Einstein faculty from 1967 until his retirement in 1993. Board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation, he earned his M.D. degree from the New York University School of Medicine in 1953. He then completed his internship at Maimonides Hospital (now known as Maimonides Medical Center) in Brooklyn, an assistant residency in medicine at Montefiore Hospital and a senior residency in medicine at Kingsbridge Veterans Administration Hospital in the Bronx, followed by a fellowship in the office of vocational rehabilitation, physical medicine and rehabilitation at Montefiore. He served on many committees and was a member of the American Academy of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and other professional medical associations.
Dr. Levine worked with the early giants and founders of the department of rehabilitation medicine at Einstein and Montefiore in the 1960s: the late Drs. Arthur Abramson, professor and founding chairman of the department; Edward Delagi, professor emeritus of physical medicine and rehabilitation; Heinz Lippman, distinguished university professor emeritus of physical medicine and rehabilitation; and Matei Roussan, former chairman of rehabilitation medicine and clinical professor emeritus.
“Sam was the last of that generation,” noted Dr. Stanley Wainapel, who recalled Dr. Levine as a genial and diplomatic mentor during his own residency at Montefiore.
Dr. Wainapel, who is now professor of clinical physical medicine and rehabilitation and chief of the Arthur S. Abramson Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Einstein, as well as clinical director of rehabilitation medicine at Montefiore, added, “We all mourn his loss.”
