Einstein Pi Party
On Wednesday, March 15, 2017, Einstein held a belated Pi Day celebration, thanks to the snow storm that shut down schools and businesses in the tri-state area on March 14 – the proper date for the occasion. The inaugural event also marked Albert Einstein’s birthday.
Members of the Einstein community consumed 280 pieces of pie — apple, blueberry and cherry — during Einstein's Pi Day celebration. At right, second-year medical student Amy Kang shows off the $25 Starbuck's gift card she won in the pi recitation competition. Sixty-seven digits after the decimal point rolled off her tongue easy as, well, pie.
Attendees enjoyed pie, of course—with choices of apple, blueberry and cherry—along with trivia on pi, pie, Einstein, the man and Einstein, the institution. They also competed in Einstein’s first-ever Pi Recitation Competition. Second-year medical student Amy Kang took pi the furthest, reciting 67 places past the decimal. She beat a number of tough customers, including PREP student Sara Gebre (52), M.D./Ph.D. candidate Ross Firestone (52), faculty member Dr. Ira Leviton (63) and visiting scientist Lei Kong (65). All competitors won a prize for their efforts, thanks to the Falk Recreation Center and the office of student activities, which provided free one-month memberships and Einstein gear, respectively. Ms. Kang will be visiting the Starbuck’s across from the Einstein campus, where she’ll be able to enjoy the $25 gift card that she earned.
Editor’s Note: To see Ms. Kang winningly recite pi to the 67th value after the decimal, visit the Albert Einstein College of Medicine Facebook page. And to get a sense of just how that would look as a number, see the homepage image. The blue numbers represent the first 67 numerals after the decimal, as recited by Ms. Kang.
