Addressing Sensitive Situations Abroad
A poster presented at the Society of General Internal Medicine conference by Dr. Marti Grayson, senior associate dean for medical education, Jill Raufman, director of medical student global health programs, and Dr. Viraj Patel, assistant professor of medicine, was accepted as part of the Innovations in Medical Education session. The poster highlighted a new component of training that’s been integrated into Einstein’s existing Pre-Travel Lecture, required to be attended by all global health fellowship students. The lecture was instituted after several students shared an upsetting experience in which they heard homophobic remarks made by hospital staff in a host country and were uncertain of how to react. The structured session addresses scenarios like this, and is designed to help students develop strategies for ethically navigating settings where there may be sexual and gender minority bias.
