Something Brewing in the Library
On June 5, 2017, the D. Samuel Gottesman Library staff hosted a beer-tasting event in conjunction with Bronx Brewery, to promote the National Library of Medicine (NLM) exhibit currently on display (through June 16). The exhibit, From DNA to Beer: Harnessing Nature in Medicine and Industry, explores how life forms such as bacteria, yeasts, and molds can cause sickness or restore health, and help produce foods and beverages for our consumption.
Students view the NLM exhibit and compete in a trivia contest for prizes while also enjoying a beer tasting conducted by a representative from Bronx Brewery.
A representative from the brewery conducted the beer tasting while also discussing the beer-making process. More than 50 students enjoyed a study break, which included snacks and a small taste of several beers. They also competed for prizes by answering trivia related to the NLM exhibit. Winners included Joshua Benton, Sophia Lieberman and Aaron Burkenroad, who received $25 gift cards to Bronx Brewery.
It was a great opportunity to highlight the science of making beer and the art of proper beer tasting to an audience that was engaged and interested in learning about it,” noted Bronx Brewery rep Kate Matthews. “This was our first time bringing a brewing instruction and beer tasting to an academic institution, and we’re thrilled that Einstein reached out to us.
“This is the second time we’ve collaborated with a local business to promote library resources or activities,” noted Aurelia Minuti, head of reference and educational services at the library. In March, the library hosted the Morris Park branch of the New York Public Library (NYPL) at an event to register users for an NYPL library card and to share some of the many resources available at both the NYPL and the D. Samuel Gottesman Library. “The beer-tasting event educated the participants on the science behind the process,” said Ms. Minuti. “I overheard one participant say, ‘This is awesome! Who knew Pasteur played a role in making good beer?’”
