Views from Abroad

Einstein’s Global Health Fellowship Program has installed its annual photography exhibit depicting locales where Einstein students, faculty and staff have traveled abroad. The display will hang along “Main Street” in the Forchheimer building through the end of October, and Jill Raufman, the program’s director, is hosting an array of activities this fall to introduce new students to global health opportunities and to welcome returning students and faculty.

At Global Health Night, which was held in September, returning global health fellowship awardees and faculty discussed their experiences taking part in nine different fellowship programs. These ranged from a medical Spanish program in Peru to a community health project in Uganda, to a physical medicine & rehabilitation project that featured prosthetics printed using Einstein’s own 3-D printer, which were fitted to a patient in Jamaica. Approximately 60 members of the Einstein community enjoyed dinner and conversation while comparing summer experiences.

Upcoming events include a Student-Faculty Meet and Greet on Tuesday, October 17, through which medical students can meet faculty and hear about opportunities for global health fellowships. And on Saturday, November 11, Ms. Raufman will host a special Global Health Networking Event, offering medical and public health graduate students from throughout metropolitan New York the opportunity to meet people who work in global health at locations all over the world.

Elizabeth Dupont Rolex?The King of All Street Food: In Soroti, Uganda, a street vendor makes “Rolex,” which consists of scrambled eggs rolled up in a chapati (the local bread). Noah Elkins El Huyro Health Center with Physician and District Mayo: Taking part in a public health activity to inform the Huyro people about Leishmaniasis, a rare infection spread by sandflies. Allison Grant Plaza de la Independencia: A sense of tranquility belies the chaos of the ongoing protest just a few feet away. Mame (Fari) Fall “Street Art in Xela”: This artwork promotes the notion that it's better to value oneself, and to show your culture by picking up garbage if you see someone litter. Lawrence Gross Disparity: Highlighting the massive wealth disparity in Egypt, this recently built state-of-the-art apartment building and new bank are beside ruins on the left where two kids are seen playing. Ameer Halim Montaña de Siete Colores: Finally reaching the stunningly beautiful summit of Vinicunca—more commonly known as Montaña de Siete Colores (Mountain of Seven Colors)—at an altitude of 17,000 feet, was the perfect culmination of an amazing month-long trip in Peru. Howard Herman “Gone Fishing”: Mayreau is tiny island only accessible by boat with a population of 271, where fishing as a vocation is passed down from generation to generation. Lauren Klingensmith The Mountains of Vietnam: A hike up the mountains surrounding Sapa, in northern Vietnam, offered this view of the rice paddies and minority communities that make up the area. Michael Kornblit Prayer Flags & Bell: Tibetan prayer flags at the Kunzum Mata Temple at Kunzum Pass (15,060 feet), connecting the Lahaul Valley and the Spiti Valley in Himachal Pradesh, India. Devon Lawrence Dhobi: Motorcycle leaning against a building in the Palrabling Tibetan Settlement at Dhobi, where thousands of Tibetan refugees live in Northern India. Devon Lawrence Rafting on Kulta Kucha: The Kulta Kucha is a small lake south of the city of Riobamba that plays a major part in the economy of the Colta Cantón. Indigenous craftspeople use the totora, a type of reed that grows in the lake, to produce baskets and mats that they sell at the market. Noah Levine Border Moon: As dusk falls near the northern Drakensberg, near the border between the country of Lesotho and the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa, these trees laden heavily with berries lined a small lake near my lodging. Sean O’Keefe Road to Nowhere: My hastily-found lodging, more than a kilometer down an unmarked, bumpy dirt road, during a trip to the Hluhluwe Game Reserve, three hours north of the city of Durban, where I was working for the summer. Sebastian Placide Sacred Heart of Jesus Overlooking the Mediterranean Sea: Taken from inside the Jairán Wall (built circa 1020) you can see the statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, and the mix of Moorish and Christian history in Almeria in the south of Spain. Miguel Rodriguez “Have you seen …?”: In Da Nang, Vietnam, I came across a family of beach fishermen hauling in a large net. When they took a break, I wondered whether what they were discussing was as silly as things we sometimes talk about, like “Have you seen that new romantic comedy?” Shakhawat Shamim Overlooking Soroti: Overlooking Soroti and listening to the sounds echoing from the mosques as the celebrations were beginning for the last day of Ramadan. Delia Shen Lunch on a Mountainside: In Kingston, Jamaica, after building and presenting a 3-D printed myoelectric prosthetic hand for a patient, our research team went to a restaurant up in the mountains to celebrate our success. Tushara Surapaneni Modelo del Átomo: In a residential neighborhood of Quito, Ecuador, this youngster walked slowly behind a group of his friends, carefully handling his creation, conjuring memories for all of us at Einstein—no science fair is complete without atomic models! Ines Timoney-Gomez Minions y Chales: Three generations—mother, daughter, and grandson—spend the day together selling shawls outside of Quito's Palacio de Carondelet, a tourist hotspot. Lauren Klingensmith Sunset on Dolphin Cove: Following participation in a week-long free clinic in a rural parish of Ocho Rios, Jamaica, we caught this sunset, which offered an idyllic place to reflect on the impact we made in helping hundreds of patients over the course of just a few days. Tushara Surapaneni Bikira Maria Kliniki: This is the first clinic I worked at in Tanzania; while patients are welcomed with its bright color, the bars on the windows and doors remind you of the valuable medicines kept within. Katya Dombrowski A Morning Drink: After spending hours with the elephants at a sanctuary where they were treated properly, I came to appreciate just how amazing they are; as tourists we have a responsibility to make sure that wildlife is not exploited for our amusement. Michael Kornblit Cambodia: Cambodia’s Angkor Wat, the largest religious monument in the world. Galit Benoni The Floating Islands: Made from dried totora reeds that grow in Lake Titicaca, the Uros Islands “float” on dense roots that the plants develop and interweave to form a natural layer called Khili. These must be replaced whenever those at the bottom of the islands rot away. Brittany Oster Eye Exam: In Huyro, Peru, patients in rural areas rarely have the opportunity to be seen by a specialist, such as this visiting ophthalmologist. Nikea Frith
