Taking Action on Behalf of Important Issues
On Saturday, March 24, 2018, members of the Einstein-Montefiore community met in Manhattan to take part in the March for Our Lives. Einstein and Montefiore participation in the event was organized by leadership of Einstein’s chapters of the SNMA, LMSA, White Coats for Black Lives, PRIDE, and Medical Students for Choice, in conjunction with the Einstein-Montefiore Action Group and the departments of pediatrics and family and social medicine. The student groups also hosted a poster-making luncheon and “lunch and learn” focused on the effects of gun violence, which they held in the Education Center several days before the march.
Members of the Einstein-Montefiore march team were able to find one another thanks to the unicorn balloon carried by Dr. Bill Jordan.
During the lunch and learn, more than a dozen members of the Einstein community shared their motivation for taking part in the march, with several members relating the direct impact of gun violence in their lives. Others discussed how the rash of shootings at schools and other venues throughout our nation have left them feeling unsafe much of the time. Before crafting their march posters, the group members broke out into three smaller discussion groups to share insights and ideas on how to better address the various aspects of mass shootings and actions we all can take – to prevent a shooting from happening, in the midst of a shooting, and in the aftermath of such events.
On Thursday, April 5, the Einstein Montefiore Action Group hosted a rally, “Earth Day Celebration: Let’s March for Science!” The event featured three members of the Einstein community discussing why science is important. Clinton DePaolo, a research technician and 1199 delegate led off by presenting “Science and the Working-Class.” Dr. Victor Schuster, senior vice dean, then discussed “The Usefulness of Useless Science. Dr. Liise-anne Pirofski, professor of medicine and of microbiology & immunology rounded out the presentations with “Science Is for Believers.”
Emceed by Dr. Alberto Pereda, professor of neuroscience, those in attendance also learned about a poster-making session being held on Thursday, April 12 during lunch, organized by Einstein’s 1199 leadership, and the meeting place for the Einstein-Montefiore participants in the March for Science on Saturday, April 14 at 9 a.m. (at the Cooper Triangle, at the corner of East 6th Street and Cooper, about one block from the Astor Place 6 train stop).
