Celebrate Mother Earth!
While the official Earth Day may have passed, we can always be mindful of how we can better care for our home planet. So, we’ll continue celebrating Mother Earth through the end of the month and into early May (which is National Bike Month!). Take part in one, some, or all activities, and remember to recycle, reuse, rejuvenate!
Daily:
- Stop by the Earth Week Sustainability Table in the Forchheimer lobby — use the opportunity to recycle ink cartridges, pens, batteries, keys, and more. Pick up information on cycling and Einstein’s 511NY Ride Share program. Share how you’re “green” to enter a raffle for fun prizes! (Please note your name, phone and e-mail legibly so we can contact you when you win!)
- Cast your vote — help identify the most useful/practical, most creative, and most quirky/unusual re-uses of the 3-D filament spools that were provided to contestants by the D. Samuel Gottesman Library staff. Entries in the contest are on display in the library, with voting through Friday, May 4. Stop by to see ingenuity, creativity, and originality of your colleagues and classmates! Your votes help select the winners of some great prizes!
- Share your own ingenuity — Have you found an interesting re-use of an object? Perhaps you turned a gallon milk jug into a “head mannequin” for your bike helmet, or you turned some old jeans into a purse. If you’ve created a crafty re-use for anything, submit a photo of it by Friday, May 4 to the library at 3d@einstein.yu.edu. Include your name, department or class year, name of original object that you repurposed, and name of your creation. When the winners of the filament spool re-use competition are announced, the photos will go on display at the library along with the winning spool creations.
- Donate your coins — if you’re using disposable cups at the Einstein Café, consider supporting initiatives of Einstein’s Sustainability Club with a donation to the coin jar near the café’s coffee station. Or compete in the “How I’m Green” raffle (noted above) to possibly win a reusable mug. Also watch for details on other ways to be “green,” including sorting your trash into the clearly marked bins around the café.
Tuesday, May 1: Saddle up for National Bike Month — register with the Einstein Community team by visiting www.lovetoride.net/usa. Log your rides, invite colleagues/friends to join the team, and enjoy racking up the mileage! Also watch for information on our upcoming Bike Week activities (slated for May 14 to 18), including a bike ride after work to a fun, local destination.
Wednesday, May 2: Show that You’re Earth Friendly — wear green today to demonstrate that you support measures to counter climate change and your love for our planet. And, if you haven’t yet entered the “How I’m Green” raffle, visit the tables in the lobby and fill out a slip. We’ll have the first drawing for some of the great prizes at around 2 p.m.!
Thursday, May 3: Compete in Recycling/Earth Week Jeopardy — put together a team of four and come play for the chance to win fun prizes. Come to the Housing Courtyard, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Rain location: Housing Lobby, 1925/1935 Eastchester.
Friday, May 4: Check out a composting demonstration — learn how your home waste can avoid the landfill and be renewed for use in your home garden. Swing by the Housing Courtyard, between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. (There will be several demonstrations, so come when you can!) Rain location: Housing Lobby, 1925/1935 Eastchester.
ALSO, beginning on Friday: Rejuvenate your wardrobe at the Spring Clothing Exchange! Bring clothes you no longer want (cleaned, with pockets emptied) to the Housing Lobby (1925/1935 Eastchester). Place your items with the proper size at the labeled bins, and exchange each item for any other clothing from others. The “exchange” will continue through Friday, May 11. After then, leftover clothes will be donated to the Living Room through Einstein’s CBSL HOPE.
