Cost-Savings Freeze Play
The College of Medicine is working on freeing up capacity for its back-up generators so they continue to perform adequately during power outages while also reducing our overall energy costs. A top priority in achieving these objectives is reducing Einstein’s overall inventory of older (pre-2009), ultra-low freezers (also known as -80 freezers), located in energy-constrained buildings on campus. These would be freezers located in the Ullmann, Forchheimer, Chanin, Golding or Kennedy buildings.
Out with the old and in with the new – researchers can upgrade their old -80 freezers with new, more energy-efficient models by taking advantage of the special freezer replacement program being offered by the office of scientific resources.
Older model -80 freezers consume energy at a rate three times higher than today’s more energy- efficient models. “At that ratio, every old freezer that we eliminate will make room for up to three energy-efficient freezers on our back-up generators,” said Brian Pelowski, administrator for scientific resources.
If your lab has a -80 freezer that was purchased before January 1, 2009, that you want to replace, Einstein will provide $5,000 toward the purchase price of a Panasonic VIP ECO or a Thermo TSX600D in exchange for retiring your working -80 freezer.
“Labs that are interested in purchasing a freezer should complete this brief survey,” said Mr. Pelowski. “After reviewing your survey submission, we will contact you to discuss next steps.”
He added, “There are a limited number of subsidies available for the 2018 budget year.”
Only the devices noted above are eligible for purchase with this subsidy. Devices traded in must be functional ultra-low/-80 freezers purchased before January 1, 2009 and be located on Einstein’s Jack and Pearl Resnick campus in Ullmann, Forchheimer, Chanin, Golding or Kennedy.
