Celebrating Human-Powered Transport
For some, the bicycle represents childhood. It is the youthful form of transportation before you get your driver’s license and wheels with a motor. But for many conservation-conscious individuals or those with a bit of “kid” still in them, the bicycle is a viable form of transportation that frees you from the constraints of a car and traffic.
Einstein offers bike racks throughout its campus, including in the parking garage. To view all locations of campus bike racks, view this printable campus map.
To mark the beauty and wonder of two-wheeled mobility, Einstein’s office of energy management and sustainability is hosting Bike Week, Monday, May 14 through Friday, May 18, 2018.
“There are so many dimensions to cycling, whether you commute to work, ride with a club, do charity rides or races, or head off-road on a mountain bike,” said Mike Winkler, director of energy management and sustainability. “We’ve put together some fun and informative events to celebrate the cyclists in our community and to encourage those who might be curious to know more about how they can enjoy cycling here or closer to home.”
Check out the schedule of events below and come on out!
All Week: Join “Einstein Community,” the College of Medicine’s National Bike Challenge team. Log your miles, whether commuting to work or on errands, or heading out for long or short ride at other times.
Tuesday, May 15: Drop by the Ernst Jaffe 30th Annual Vendor Show in Lubin Dining Hall between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., and visit the 511NY Ride Share table. You can learn about how to find a cycling buddy for your commute to work (as well as those traveling via four wheels or using public transportation).
Wednesday, May 16: Submit a raffle entry titled “Why I Ride” to Ask Einstein! We’ll select several winners from among all entries for some fun prizes.
Thursday, May 17: Bring your lunch and stop by the Housing Courtyard from 12:30 to 2 p.m. for a “Lunch and Learn” on easy-to-do bike maintenance tips. (You don’t need a bike to participate, but bring yours if you have it on campus.) You’ll also be able to register you bike with the NYPD; Officer Mederos will join us from the 49th Precinct. Those living in housing can also complete (or update) a campus bike registration form. And anyone who brings their bicycle helmet can get help with a proper helmet fit, to be sure your brain bucket is truly protecting your most precious cargo.
Friday, May 18: If you get to Einstein on two wheels, between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m., come by the Belfer bike rack (even if you park elsewhere) to enjoy our annual Bike Commuter Breakfast. There will also be free samples of Adventure Cycling magazine and NYC bike route maps, and information about cycling. And don’t forget you can get a free Bike Commuter Shower Pass at Falk Center, to use the shower facilities when you ride to work and need to freshen up.
