UJA-Federation of New York Honors Yaron Tomer, M.D.
UJA-Federation of New York honored Yaron Tomer, M.D., chair of medicine, at its 2018 Montefiore Health System & Albert Einstein College of Medicine annual reception, held on May 10, 2018, at Montefiore.

Steven Safyer, M.D., president and chief executive officer of Montefiore Medicine, presented Dr. Tomer with his award, which recognizes his outstanding professional achievements and commitment to philanthropy.
Dr. Tomer is professor and chair of medicine at Einstein and Montefiore, and holds the Anita and Jack Saltz Chair in Diabetes Research. He is a leader in the field of thyroid autoimmunity, including Graves’ and Hashimoto’s diseases. His research focuses on the genetic, epigenetic, and environmental mechanisms underlying thyroid autoimmunity and type 1 (juvenile) diabetes.
Dr. Tomer also is the recipient of several prestigious awards, including the American Thyroid Association’s Van Meter Award and Abbott Thyroid Research Mentor Award. He is a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation and a fellow of the American College of Physicians. Born and raised in Israel, Dr. Tomer served as a medical commander in the Israel Defense Forces before coming to the United States. He received his medical degree from the Sackler School of Medicine. He trained in internal medicine at Sheba Medical Center in Israel and in endocrinology in the United States, at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
Edward Burns, M.D., and Susan Klugman, M.D., served as chairs of UJA’s Montefiore Health System & Albert Einstein College of Medicine Campaign.
