Holi Offers Cultural Fun on a Friday Afternoon
On April 27, 2018, Einstein students, their families and friends had a blast – of colorful powder and water encased in balloons and water shooters – as they marked Holi, the “festival of colors” that is observed all over India. Holi marks the arrival of spring and the end of winter, and celebrates a good harvest. In Hindu legend, it symbolizes the victory of good over evil, and triumph of faith in bhagwan (god).
Students display the results of their celebrating
Traditionally, colors found in nature, with the newly arrived spring (from flower and leaf extracts, turmeric and other natural sources), are used. At the Einstein celebration, vibrant-colored water and powder were provided for turning white t-shirts into rainbow splattered “canvases.”
Nisha Shah, one of the event organizers, explained, “The celebration includes music, dancing, throwing colors and water, and indulging in traditional delicacies of India—all of which symbolize the general happiness and joy that characterizes Holi.”
The eventful afternoon was hosted by the office of student activities in conjunction with Einstein’s chapter of the Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association. It was held in the housing courtyard.
