Outstanding Physician-Scientist and Clinician, and Inspirational Teacher
The Einstein Montefiore community recently mourned the loss of Dr. Herbert Tanowitz, professor of pathology and of medicine (infectious diseases), who died unexpectedly on Tuesday, July 17, 2018. A world-class physician-scientist, Dr. Tanowitz was renowned for his pioneering research on the pathogenesis of Chagas Disease, a tropical parasitic infection caused by Trypanosoma cruzi. He embodied the role of the academic physician and was beloved by his patients, fellows, and students alike. After graduating from the College of Medicine in 1967 and completing his residency in internal medicine at Lincoln Hospital, he joined the Einstein faculty in 1975 and served as an attending physician at Jacobi and Montefiore.
To honor his legacy and memory, the department of pathology has established the Dr. Herbert B. Tanowitz Honorary Lecture Fund for Parasitology and Tropical Medicine to support an annual lecture that will focus on parasitology and tropical medicine, the driving research interests of Dr. Tanowitz’ long and distinguished career. The inaugural lecture will feature a full-day symposium on the pathogenesis of Chagas Disease, including research on the role of adipose tissue in this chronic infection. View the lecture fund page for further information or to make a donation.
