Children’s Hospital at Montefiore Explores Life, Death, and Organ Donation through Stories
The Quality in Life Team at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM) is hosting a series of events from Saturday, October 27 through Thursday, November 1, 2018, as part of Reimagine Week—a city-wide effort to explore the topics of life, death and remembrance. All over New York City, people, organizations and institutions across the fields of art, culture and healthcare will host art shows, book readings, documentary screenings and educational workshops, each designed to break down taboos and bring diverse communities together to reflect on why we’re here, prepare for a time when we won’t be, and live fully right up until the end. CHAM is the only hospital partner in the Bronx hosting a series of events, and invites the Einstein community to take part.
Saturday, October 27: In the Montefiore Moses courtyard at 2:30 p.m., CHAM will honor children who have died by placing stars in their memory as part of an interactive art installation. Together with Bronx artist Lady K-fever and the students of Academy of Mt. St. Ursula, join CHAM in celebrating children’s lives. While they may no longer be with us, they will always live on in our hearts. Please RSVP to secure a ticket.
Monday, October 29: CHAM is partnering with the Mosholu branch of the New York Public Library, Connect Lives and Live On New York to host two very special events in one day. From 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., there will be a family story hour, reading When Dinosaurs Die, A Guide to Understanding Death. Children and families often struggle for words and this book helps our youngest readers learn that death is a natural part of life.
In the evening, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., CHAM will host a book discussion and author talk about the moving story of Taylor Storch, who died at age 13 in a ski accident. Her parents chose for Taylor to live on through others as an organ donor. Taylor’s mom Tara Storch will share more of her story. Please RSVP to secure a ticket for either of these events.
Tuesday, October 30: At noon, CHAM is collaborating with the students at Academy of Mt. St. Ursula, an all-women’s Catholic high school, in an interactive educational event aimed at exploring culture, values and faith. The event will focus on gaining the knowledge needed to make an informed choice around organ donation as a potential way to live on. Please RSVP to secure a ticket.
Tuesday, October 30: Story Slam will be hosted at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where staff, faculty and the community will gather to share experiences of remembrance through organ donation. Do you have a story to tell? Drop in anytime between 6 and 7:30 p.m. to join us on stage at Robbins Auditorium. Please RSVP to secure a ticket.
Thursday, November 1: CHAM is partnering with the Kingsbridge branch of the New York Public Library, Connect Lives and Live On New York to host another family story hour at 10:30 a.m., reading When Dinosaurs Die, A Guide to Understanding Death. Children and families often struggle for words and this book helps our youngest readers learn that death is a natural part of life. Please RSVP to secure a ticket
Thursday, November 1: At 6 p.m., at CHAM’s Family Learning Place, take part in a special night with singer-songwriter Emily Cavanagh as she helps parents whose children have died share stories and turn them into the beginnings of a song. No experience is needed, only a desire to remember. Please RSVP to secure a ticket.
