Growing Einstein’s Biggest Asset: Your Talent
Einstein employees are a diverse bunch, but they all have at least one thing in common: valuable talent. As an organization, we need to nurture professional growth. Through newly expanded online and classroom programs on leadership, skills improvement, and navigating Einstein systems, the revamped Learning Network website—which launched last September—helps us to do that.

Thanks to installation of the “Talent Management” system platform, the reconfigured Learning Network is now available to all members of the Montefiore Health System—which includes Einstein. The system programs are administered by Richard Schwab, senior manager of learning and organization development in Montefiore’s Learning Network, who also is among several newcomers to human resources during the past year.
“We’re excited to offer our programs across institutions,” said Richard. “When people from various workplaces meet in a class, you’re exposed to different issues, styles and thoughts, and people learn from each other.
He added, “And online content for the classes is available 24/7, with a broader range of content accessible online than in the classroom. This includes access to LinkedIn Learning—formerly Lynda.com—which offers thousands of webinars and videos on a broad range of topics and skills.”

Richard has also bumped up the number and level of the offerings. “Most of the new training is in the Leadership Development category, geared to skills and knowledge needed to lead a team of people,” he said.
Courses in this area include Interviewing Skills, Introduction to Leadership, Building Trust, Making High-Quality Decisions, Coaching Skills and Influence Skills.
A second category, Process Improvement, addresses work skills. Central to this category is an innovative program called Lean Six Sigma that encourages companies and individuals to use data instead of assumptions and guesswork to make informed, targeted choices that put them on a path to success. One component of Lean Six Sigma is PDSA (Plan, Do, Study, Act), shorthand for a systematic way of testing change.

There also is Einstein-specific systems training, which offers helpful lessons on using Einstein systems such as e-Pro--the College of Medicine’s “marketplace,” which lists preferred vendors--and Concur, a recently adopted platform that has streamlined the expense reimbursement procedure.
As with previous offerings, class sizes will remain small. “A smaller, intimate feeling in the classroom encourages participation,” said Richard. “And we will have many more classes at Einstein, rather than at sites that require traveling, to make it easier for members of the campus community to attend.”
Upcoming offerings this summer including “Building and Sustaining Trust,” on Tuesday, August 20, from 1 to 4:30 p.m., and “Coaching for Peak Performance,” on Monday, August 26, from 9 a.m.to 4 p.m. To see the full array of available classes and modules, visit Einstein’s Learning Network pages.
