Excellence Recognized During the 2019 Dennis Shields Prize Ceremony
Every year the Einstein community comes together to hear the winners of the Dennis Shields Postdoctoral Research Prizes present their published work. The award recognizes exemplary work by Einstein’s postdoctoral research fellows that has appeared in leading peer-reviewed publications.
The award is named for Dr. Dennis Shields, who was professor of developmental and molecular biology and of anatomy and structural biology for 30 years, and the first director of the Belfer Institute. Dr. Shields’ advocacy on behalf of Einstein’s postdoctoral fellows was influential in ensuring that their contributions to science and the academic community are more widely recognized.
On June 13, 2019, this year’s Shields Prize recipients were Dr. Maria Maryanovich, in the laboratory of Dr. Paul Frenette, and Dr. Miriam Toledo Soler, in the laboratory of Dr. Rajat Singh. In addition to presenting their work, Drs. Maryanovich and Toledo Soler each received a $5,000 award that was presented by Dr. Gordon F. Tomaselli, Einstein’s Marilyn and Stanley M. Katz Dean.
The Shields ceremony also honored five additional postdocs with a $500 award for their outstanding posters, which were on display along Main Street throughout the month of June. This year’s poster winners were Dr. Eric Lontchi Yimagou and Dr. Shayda Hemmati, both in the department of medicine, Dr. Lucia Borriello, in anatomy & structural biology, Dr. Shuxian Dong, in developmental and molecular biology, and Dr. Hiroko Nomaru, in genetics.
