Remembering Tim Nelson
On September 27, 2019, the Einstein community learned of the passing of Tim Nelson, our telecommunications technician for more than 15 years. He was 63.
Although Tim was an on-site technician, most recently for our vendor Telserv, his role here made him an integral part of our Einstein community. On a day-in, day-out basis, Tim was responsible for assuring that our phone system throughout the campus worked flawlessly, and he addressed our various telecommunications needs with his gregarious warmth and charm.

“Tim was the definition of a gentleman who was loyal, caring, funny, giving, and sweet,” recalled Cher Libutti, a colleague in auxiliary services. “There aren’t enough words to express how lucky we were to know him.”
“Tim’s work at Einstein was essential to all that we do here,” noted Dr. Gregg Tarquinio, associate dean for administration and finance. “Being able to connect with others in a variety of settings is of the utmost import. And Tim took great pride in providing top-notch service for us.”
Tim was born on August 20, 1956, in Mullen, South Carolina, the second youngest of 10 children. He served as a paratrooper in the U.S. Army, where he learned about the finer nuances of telecommunications as well. An avid fisherman, jazz aficionado, and talented cook, Tim was famous for bringing food he’d prepared to share with his co-workers.
“Tim always knew what to say to put a smile on your face,” said Sadie Young, a member of Einstein’s security team who was close with Tim. “He loved to share what he loved, his food, stories about fishing with his brother Mark and his travels, and his music. He’d come in here and hold out his headphones, saying “Sadie, you gotta hear this!”

“My fondest memory of Tim was that he was always eating,” said Monique Buon-Muñiz, another colleague in auxiliary services. “Every day he would come to work with pre-made lunches, fruits, nuts, and healthy snacks. And he was proud of his cooking. Here in the office, we loved when Tim made his turkey burger, smothered with onions, on fresh bread.”
“We used to tell him that when he retired, he was going to open a food truck to service Einstein employees,” added Cher.
He was most proud of his family, particularly his children and grandchildren. He loved to travel and often vacationed with other family members. He is survived by his sisters Shirley, Bonnie, and Lisa, “brother” Mark, children, grandchildren, and 1,001 friends. He will be sorely missed.
Tim’s family will hold a memorial on Saturday, October 12, from noon to 1:30 p.m., at Holy Trinity Church, in Westfield, NJ, open to all who wish to attend. The church’s address is 315 First Street. A repast will follow in the annex of the church.
