Making a Difference on Campus and Beyond
On Thursday, October 17, 2019, Einstein will be holding its biannual blood drive, organized in collaboration with the New York Blood Center (NYBC). Over the past two years, approximately 100 members of the Einstein community have participated in each event.
Among the Einstein’s perennial donors are Martin Penn, senior director of operations in the office of medical education, and Carla Pasquali, director of benefits in human resources. Inside Einstein chatted with them to learn what tips they have to offer other potential blood donors. Einstein will be aiming to get 100 pints donated to help counter the blood shortage that has challenged New York City in recent years.
Marty has been donating blood for more than 25 years. It all began when a former colleague asked Marty to come along when he went to give blood. When asked to share some advice for first-time donors, he said, “Having a buddy with you definitely helps. But mainly, relax, and don't focus on what is going on.”
Carla was initially inspired by her mother, who was passionate about helping others. She began donating blood as a teenager. “We can’t always donate money to all the causes that may be important to us, but if we’re healthy, we can always donate a pint of blood,” noted Carla.
She added, “If you’re feeling up to it, you can give as often as every 56 days.” She tries to give blood throughout the year, including at the two Einstein blood drives.
Perhaps you’re thinking about donating but you’re not quite sure you’re up to it. Following are some valuable insights offered by these experienced donors that can help:
- Bring a colleague, lab mate, mentor, or friend for moral support.
- Be sure to drink plenty of fluids the day before you donate, and after your donation.
- Keep yourself occupied during the process.
- Before you head out after you’ve finished, remember to take advantage of the free juice and snacks offered. You’ve “lost” a pint of blood and can benefit from the energy boosting treats!
The Einstein Blood Drive on October 17 will be held from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., in the Lubin Dining Hall. For additional information, please contact Kyoto Cotton (kyoto.cotton@einstein.yu.edu) or call 718-430-3771.
