A Night for Art & Literary Stars to Shine
Einstein may be a center for creative scientific thought, but once a year, creativity of another kind is celebrated: At its annual Art Night, our students, faculty, and staff get to reveal their artistic selves through their photography, drawings, paintings, poetry, essays and short stories.

“This event is unique on our campus,” said Basia Galinski, the neuroscience Ph.D. student who is spearheading the 13th Art Night on Wednesday, January 15, 2020. “It’s a great way to acknowledge that, though we all may be great in science and medicine, we also have talents that lie elsewhere.” The evening is sponsored by Ad Libitum, Einstein’s literary magazine, for which Basia is co-editor-in-chief.
Since 2011, Art Night has also included a silent auction of some of the artwork that is on display. Proceeds go to the Bronx River Art Center, which provides a creative outlet for area artists and youth—including a few Einstein students. Over the past eight years, the auctions have raised approximately $4,000 for the center. “There needs to be more awareness of this campus fundraiser, which benefits the wider Bronx community,” said Basia.
The evening typically draws 150 to 200 artists, writers, and their guests, and “this year we’re getting a lot of interest on the Montefiore side, which is really great,” said Basia. “Art Night has always been open, and now Montefiore is part of the campus—they receive all campuswide notices. We get emails: ‘Am I really allowed to contribute?’ The answer is absolutely yes!”
Basia began serving as Ad Libitum’s liaison to Art Night during her second year but has never submitted anything and probably never will, she said. Then why is she so involved? “I just really enjoy running Art Night,” she said. “This is not about my contributions but the compiled contributions of the campus.”
For all Einstein students, faculty, and staff, and associates at Montefiore with a creative bent, the deadline to submit your art or writing for inclusion in this year’s Art Night is Friday, December 6, 2019. Simply complete the online form, which you also can access on the Ad Libitum website. The January 15 event will start at 5 p.m. in the Lubin Dining Hall and will include live music as well as visual art and the written and spoken word. Questions?
