Share Einstein’s Heart: Give the Gift of Life
On Tuesday, February 4, 2020, members of the Einstein community will again have the opportunity to participate in the Winter Blood Drive, held in coordination with the New York Blood Center (NYBC).
Last year, Einstein blood donors provided 192 units of blood and gave a significant boost to the metropolitan area’s blood supply. The goal for this drive is 85 pints. An individual can donate blood every 56 days, so you can still donate if you already gave at the Einstein blood drive held last September.
Since January 2018, 323 donors registered to give blood at Einstein. “Our community members have consistently stepped up to the plate to help provide much-needed blood resources,” said Robert Cancellieri, director of employee relations and blood drive chair. “On February 4, we’re hoping to see similar participation. You can really make a difference with this gift of life.”
If you’re thinking about donating but are still on the fence, these facts illustrate the import of this special gift you’ll give: Someone needs blood every two seconds, and one in three people will need blood sometime during their lives. If only 1 percent more of Americans donated at a blood drive, blood shortages would disappear.
If you plan to donate blood, here are valuable insights from experienced donors:
- Bring a colleague, lab mate, mentor, or friend for moral support.
- Be sure to drink plenty of fluids the day before you donate, and after your donation.
- Keep yourself occupied during the process.
- Before you head out after you’ve finished, remember to take advantage of the free juice and snacks offered. You’ve “lost” a pint of blood and can benefit from the energy boosting treats!
The Einstein Blood Drive on February 4 will take place from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Lubin Dining Hall (in the Block Building). For additional information, please contact Kyoto Cotton (kyoto.cotton@einstein.yu.edu) or call 718-430-3771.
