Mustering Musculoskeletal Researchers to Einstein
This past October, Einstein and Montefiore’s department of orthopaedic surgery hosted its eighth annual Arnold and Madaleine Penner Musculoskeletal Repair and Regeneration Symposium. The event drew hundreds of orthopaedic researchers from across the United States to Einstein’s campus.
Those in attendance heard from 16 leading scientists, who presented their latest findings in a packed LeFrak Auditorium. They discussed advancements in musculoskeletal joint diseases and treatment, "hot topics" in bone research, muscle pathology in relation to tendon injury, and tissue repair, regeneration, and immune modulation. A poster session also highlighted work at the bench and in the clinic, conducted by dozens of researchers at the symposium.
As in previous years, during a dinner reception following the symposium, several exceptional junior-level researchers received Young Investigator Awards for their promising work in the field. These included Dr. Mikhail Golman and Dr. Iden Kurtaliaj, of Columbia University, and Dr. Christopher Panebianco, of Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. This year also featured a Clinician Young Investigator Award, presented to Dr. Alexa Karkenny, of Montefiore.
“It’s very pleasing to see how the symposium has evolved into an annual event for researchers in the field, where they can present their findings, exchange ideas, and network,” noted Dr. Neil Cobelli, professor and chair of orthopaedic surgery. “Through these exchanges, the symposium has fostered many productive collaborations over the years.”
