Helpful Hints for Reducing Your COVID-19-Induced Anxiety
The frequently changing news and information concerning coronavirus, or COVID-19, has many of us on edge. Anxiety often runs high as the number of cases worldwide and in our immediate vicinity continue to mount at alarming rates. So, how can we reboot and reduce the stress we're feeling?
Dr. Dana E. Crawford and Dr. Miguelina Germán offer insights and tips for finding inner control
amid the COVID-19 chaos, in a webinar titled "Anxiety & COVID-19" that Montefiore's Behavioral Health Integration Program and Trauma Informed Care Program teamed to produce. (There also is a version for those who'd like to view the webinar in Spanish.)
"We developed the webinar with our healthcare colleagues in mind, but it definitely has information that can be helpful to others," noted Dr. Crawford, who is assistant professor of pediatrics and of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Einstein, and director of Montefiore's Trauma Informed Care Program. "We describe it as a workforce training, but even folks who are at home, whether working remotely or isolating to stay safe, can find useful tips."
Nearly 22 minutes long, the webinar reviews useful coping skills to help the viewer get through stressful moments. It also includes a brief exercise, featuring a short video (less than one minute) with calming water and prompts for breathing. (Those who might wish to jump ahead can find it at 6:48 into the webinar.)
Dr. Germán, associate professor of pediatrics and of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Einstein, and director of pediatrics' Behavioral Health Integration Program at Montefiore, also discusses ways in which we can distract ourselves from the constant onslaught of newsfeeds and demands of the job, along with the worries brought on by both.
A quick caveat: When watching the video, please bear in mind that it was produced prior to the advice concerning physical distancing. Drs. Germán and Crawford would not want viewers to worry; nor would they advise standing as close to anyone else as we strive to flatten the curve in the Bronx and New York City.
