Einstein Hosts "Mask Parade" to Promote Prevention
In the lead-up to his inauguration on January 20, 2021, then President-Elect Joseph Biden announced that he would ask all Americans to wear a mask during the first 100 days of his administration. This initiative supports the premise put forth by Dr. Robert Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, that we could get the spread of COVID-19 under control if everyone [throughout the United States] would wear a mask when in the presence of others for three months.

If you doubt such a tactic could work, consider this: By the time Joe Biden was sworn in as our new president, COVID-19 had taken the lives of more than 400,000 Americans—more than all American lives lost during World War II. Since then—just one week ago—we’ve lost an additional 25,000.
President Biden spoke plainly about this in his inaugural speech, noting, “We’re entering what may be the toughest and deadliest period of the virus. We must set aside politics and finally face this pandemic as one nation.”

At Einstein, we’ve required masks to be worn in line with the four central strategies for preventing the spread of contagious germs—mask wearing, hand washing, safe social distancing of six feet or more, and avoiding touching one’s face or eyes. Thus far, this has contributed greatly to the low number of COVID-19 cases reported among members of our campus community.
While there have been some who have not always followed our mask-wearing guidelines at times, or who have worn their masks improperly—not covering both their nose and mouth—we have largely remained ever-diligent in our collective effort to eradicate the threat of the virus and its spread.
One Nation, Under Cover of Masks
In a recent e-blast, Dr. Gordon F. Tomaselli, our Marilyn and Stanley M. Katz Dean, noted, “In the spirit of President Biden’s challenge, I encourage each and every one of us to take part and serve as ambassadors of mask-wearing in our communities. As members of a medical and research institution, we can and should lead by example.”
With that in mind, Einstein will be hosting a “mask parade” that will feature photographs of our Einstein community members displaying their “mask”ery, demonstrated by their individuality, creativity, and pride in masterful mask wearing.
How can you take part, you ask?
Simply submit a photograph of yourself in your favorite mask. Whether it showcases artful creativity, stylish flair, inventive ingenuity, sense of humor, or patriotic (or team-worthy) pride, we want to see your faces under cover!
You may submit a photo for any one category, for several, or in each. The categories are:
- most original
- most humorous
- most fashionable
- most protective, and
- most patriotic/team-spirited
You must submit your image(s)—multiple submissions within different categories are okay—using this form—by Tuesday April 20, 2021 (which will be 90 days, or three months, from inauguration day). Simply complete the form and upload your image(s) using the link(s) provided.
We will post all images that we receive in a gallery on Inside Einstein, where you can view entries by category and vote for your favorites in each. You can “like” any image to vote for it, and you may vote for more than one image within each of the various categories—but you’ll only be able to post one vote per image. Those receiving the most “likes” will be determined the category winners.
Winners will be announced on Friday, April 30, which is Day 100 of the Biden administration, and will receive a $25 gift card to Starbucks.
And, to recognize the banner achievement of all participants, we’ll display a Mask Parade banner featuring the faces of Einstein in all of their masked glory. So, unveil your internal fashionista and share your passion for fighting COVID-19 face first. Together, we’ll make mask wearing go viral instead of SAR-CoV-2!
