Learn About Cycling in NYC (Get a Free Helmet!)
Throughout the past year, the bicycle industry experienced a tremendous boom in sales as many people sought a safe way to get outside during the COVID-19 pandemic. Shops had such a shortage of bicycles available that used bike sales also rose.
While cycling has offered a way to exercise and to get places, in New York City it also can be a bit daunting, even with car traffic reduced as it was during the lockdown last spring. So, how can one learn the ins and outs of cycling in and around the five boroughs?
One way is to tune in on Wednesday, May 19, 2021, at 12:30 p.m., to “Bicycling NYC 2.0,” a virtual presentation offered especially to our campus community by the NYC Department of Transportation, 511 NY Rideshare, and Bike New York. Learn about cycling in the city and bikes on transit, NYC bike and scooter share lanes, accessing bike trails statewide, and more! Register to take part and you will receive a free bicycle helmet, courtesy of the presenters (limited to the first 200 registrants).
The opportunity to take part in the presentation (and get a free helmet) was coordinated by Michael Winkler, director of energy management, and Jessica Lucas, director of the office of student activities. "Cycling is a great way to go places and to see things that you often miss when traveling by car," said Michael. "With everyone itching to get outside during these trying COVID times, we thought knowing where and how to access bikes, trails, and interesting sights in and around the city or to find new places to ride would be helpful to our campus community."
"Exercise is a great outlet for relieving stress," added, Jessica. "And riding a bike is a fun way to get exercise and enjoy the fresh air. The added bonus of a free helmet seemed like a neat incentive for our students, postdocs, staff, and faculty."
Since May is National Bike Month, you can take your new (or old) bike and your newfound (or expanded) knowledge and explore NYC, Westchester, and beyond. You'll find local sights that can be reached by the bike paths near campus, such as the New York Botanical Garden, the Bronx Zoo, Orchard Beach, and City Island. You also can enjoy car-free riding on Bronx River Parkway Sundays, offered during the late spring, summer, and fall between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Or check out any of the 800 miles of the recently completed Empire State Trail that runs from NYC to the Canadian border.
Whatever you do, to quote Queen's Freddie Mercury, "Get on your bike and ride!"
