Offering Help to Haiti
On August 14, 2021, a devastating earthquake of 7.2 magnitude struck the island nation of Haiti. Since then, aftershock earthquakes have continued to rattle those attempting to recover and stay safe. More than 2,000 lost their lives and many more are still missing or have been displaced.
Einstein and Montefiore have committed to offering support to Haiti through their Global Response Fund. Previously, the fund raised more than $21,000 to provide India with much-needed resources during that nation’s significant surge in COVID-19 cases. And the fund also has supported assistance to other nations in need of equipment for combatting COVID-19 or recovering from a natural disaster.
With the current drive to raise funds, the College of Medicine and health system aim to address Haiti’s dire need of surgical supplies, PPE, and other healthcare resources. As with the India effort, we have teamed with locally based non-profit Afya International with a goal of raising $40,000 to support airlifting 2,500 pounds of critical supplies to Port-au-Prince, from where the equipment and materials can be distributed to points of need.
To support the effort further, students in Einstein’s chapter of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) have teamed with Afya to collect some of the supplies most needed in Haiti. The club has set bins in the lobbies of Forchheimer and 1925/1935 Eastchester Road. Those who wish to donate supplies can place items in these bins between Monday, August 30, and Thursday, September 9. Some SNMA members will also be helping with packaging the supplies at Afya’s warehouse so that the items can be shipped to Haiti.
Needed supplies include baby diapers and wipes, baby food in non-glass containers, canned goods, combs and hairbrushes, deodorant, feminine hygiene products, soap, toilet paper, toothpaste and toothbrushes, and wash clothes.
