Let’s Be Pink with Purpose to Support Breast Cancer Research
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and we are reminded of the importance of early detection. Each year, 1 in 8 women may be diagnosed with breast cancer and, for every 100 diagnoses of the disease, 1 will be a man. This week, Einstein is holding an inaugural event aimed at bringing awareness to resources, treatment, and education targeting the second-leading cause of cancer deaths among women.
Hosted by human resources, creative services, and communications and public affairs, the event kicked off on Friday, October 22, and will run through Friday, October 29, as we raise funds in support of breast cancer research.
Members of the Einstein community are invited to stop by the Einstein Café, in Forchheimer where pink ribbon placards are available for purchase with any donation of $1 or more—no amount is too small. For each dollar raised, Einstein will match our donations up to $1,250. Donors also will be entered into a raffle for an Apple iPad, with the winner determined on October 29 and notified via email.
“Many of us know of friends or loved ones who are undergoing treatment for breast cancer, are survivors, or have died of breast cancer,” said Cookie Marie Kurtz, who spearheaded the event. “Using the ribbon placards, members of our Einstein community can remember and/or honor these individuals by personalizing and displaying a placard in the windows along Main Street. We’ve got everything you’ll need to pay tribute to them.”
The event concludes with a Pink with Purpose Wellness Fair on Friday, October 29, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., along Main Street, in Forchheimer. Participants can learn about services of our Bronx Oncology Living Daily program, research conducted at our Albert Einstein Cancer Center and treatment offered at the Montefiore Einstein Cancer Center, and other resources available for patients, caregivers, and survivors. There also will be fun games, giveaways, treats, and photo opportunities.
“For some, like me, breast cancer is very personal,” said Cookie, who is a 10-year survivor, "and I know how essential the support I received from the resources available at Einstein were and are to my survivorship. Whether you're a patient, survivor, or family member touched by this disease, we want you to be aware of the support and information available through Einstein and Montefiore. And to know the resources you can access should you need them.”
