Einstein Marks Human Rights Day
Throughout the year, the office of diversity and inclusion (D&I) hosts events and posts information aimed at expanding our vision of what it means to be a diverse community that is inclusive of all.
To mark Human Rights Day, the office of diversity and inclusion is offering a special presentation by Dr. Kamiar Alaei. Register to take part in this Zoom presentation!
On Wednesday, December 8, 2021, from noon to 1 p.m., D&I is offering a Human Rights Day event featuring global health policy expert Dr. Kamiar Alaei, professor and chair of health science at California State University Long Beach (CSULB).
In addition to being recognized by the Global Health Council, the World Health Organization, the New York Academy of Sciences, and many other notable organizations for his groundbreaking work in the field, Dr. Alaei recently received a $10 million federal grant to train underrepresented students about public health information technology aimed at reducing disparities. Through the program led by CSULB, more than 700 students from underserved communities will be recruited, trained, and placed in California’s public health workforce.
Among his accomplishments, Dr. Alaei founded triangular clinics in his native Iran, aimed at providing treatment for sexually transmitted infections, HIV/AIDS, and drug addiction. These clinics became a best-practice model within the Middle East and North Africa.
Dr. Alaei has studied medicine, health policy, infectious disease epidemiology, international health, and international human rights law at prestigious universities including Harvard and Oxford. He was co-founding director of a university-wide Global Institute for Health and Human Rights, an advanced graduate certificate in international health and human rights, and a living-learning community called the World of Global Medicine and Human Rights. He also co-founded a humanitarian, on-line initiative to educate several hundred internally displaced medical students in Syria during that country’s recent conflict.
Articles written by Dr. Alaei concerning humanitarian issues have appeared in the New York Times, Washington Post, and New Yorker, and been covered by the BBC, NPR, and other leading media outlets.
