At 20, Ad Libitum Celebrates Artistic Expression at Einstein
Twenty years ago, Tara Vijayan, class of 2007, approached Dr. Albert Kuperman, then associate dean for educational affairs, about the prospect of supporting the production of an art and literary magazine for the College of Medicine. As she explained it, "In medicine, you have incredibly profound human experiences, and I felt that having an outlet to re-experience them was helpful, even cathartic.
He agreed." And so, Ad Libitum was born.
Each publication is filled with submissions of poetry, essays, short stories, paintings, drawings, and photographs created by members of the Einstein community.
“We are thrilled to bring the 20th issue of Ad Libitum to the Einstein community,” said Olivia Albert, current editor-in-chief. “To have a publication that offers everyone at Einstein—from students, postdocs and staff to faculty, administrators, and even children of our community members—an outlet for sharing their creativity is uplifting. And the talent on display in each issue is inspiring.”
An exhibit held along Main Street last year demonstrated the breadth of creativity and talent that has graced the pages of Ad Libitum. Through the years, the size of the publication has grown, which is a testament to both the inclusivity sought by editorial staff and the desire of community members to share their art and writing with one another.
Copies of the newest Ad Libitum are now in magazine racks throughout campus and in our D. Samuel Gottesman Library. “You also can view this issue in PDF format on our website, along with our past issues,” said Olivia. Also watch for a new exhibit celebrating 20 years of Ad Libitum, which will go up along Main Street during September.
