Greally Lab Runs More Than Experiments
While it is standard practice for members of the same lab to collaborate, for some labs, experiments are not the only thing they run together. On May 7, 2022, two members in the lab of John Greally, Ph.D., D.Med., in genetics, competed in the Rockaway Track Club Mother’s Day Half-Marathon held in Rockaway Park, NY.
And while experiments can often be hit or miss, Reanna Doña-Termine and David Yang were spot on in their performance on the blustery Sunday. Each took first place in the women’s and men’s divisions, respectively!
David, a first-year Ph.D. student, finished first overall among all runners, and Reanna, a seventh-year candidate in Einstein’s Medical Science Training Program who recently defended her thesis, placed fourth. Their successes were all the more impressive given the difficult weather that day, which included heavy downpours and 30-mile-per-hour winds.
“It was a bit scary,” recalled David, who beat out his brother for first place. “The strong gusts altered the terrain of the beach where we had to run and were a major mental hurdle, but my long-distance running training has taught me to remain positive, even in the face of bad weather.”
Reanna, also an experienced runner, agreed, noting, “The conditions were unfavorable enough that many of the participants elected to remain home. That proved lucky for my first half-marathon win, as there were only about 30 runners who took part.”
Competing in a half-marathon race was a first for David, and finishing just ahead of his brother also proved lucrative. “We’ve always competed with one another and, for this race, we made a bet that the loser would pay the winner for every minute behind.” At ten dollars per minute, he made a quick $60!
Proud lab “papa” John Greally, who’s also a runner, as well as professor of genetics and of pediatrics, summed things up well when he tweeted the following along with the results: “My lab of athletes—first places at the @Rockawaytc half-marathon… well done to both.”
Well done, indeed!
