Manny Genn Prize Supports Study of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Fanta Sissoko, program manager in diversity and inclusion (D&I), is this year’s winner of the Manny Genn Prize. The honor—which provides financial assistance to an Einstein professional staff member for career development—was established by Emanuel (Manny) Genn, former associate dean for administration and finance, after he retired in 2008, following a 36-year career at the College of Medicine.
Fanta’s Journey
After earning a sociology degree from Siena College, Fanta worked in a variety of roles, including at a hiring marketplace and as a teacher. In 2020, she came to Einstein as a program coordinator in D&I.
Since her arrival on campus, Fanta has earned certificates in D&I from Cornell and New York University (NYU), and she was promoted to her current position as program manager. She is currently pursuing a master's degree in executive coaching and organizational consulting at NYU.
Former senior associate dean for diversity and inclusion Dr. Nerys Benfield noticed Fanta’s passion for learning and nominated her for the prize. “I was delighted to win,” said Fanta. “I’m very thankful to have been recognized in this way.” She will use the award funds to complete the "Leverage Diversity and Inclusion for Organizational Excellence" certificate, offered by Stanford Graduate School of Business.
A Diverse and Inclusive Family
While her work and education goals made Fanta an excellent candidate for the Genn Prize, there also was her personal experience.
“Growing up as a biracial Black woman in America, I’ve seen how people were treated differently based solely on race or gender. I want to be a part of the effort to undo some of the systemic issues that we face.”
